17-Year-Old Girl Rescued After Spending Two Days Trapped in Dense Thambala Forest Following Somawathiya Trip with Boyfriend!

A 17-year-old girl who went missing in the wildlife-dense Thambala forest area while returning from a visit to the sacred Somawathiya site with her boyfriend has been successfully rescued after a two-day search operation led by the Pulathisigura police.

Reason for Entering the Forest: The couple, residents of Monarathenna in Welikanda, traveled by motorcycle to Somawathiya on the 2nd of last month. While returning, they parked their vehicle near the 29th milepost along the Sungavila-Somawathiya road and entered the forested area.

Acting on a tip-off from a passerby who grew suspicious of the abandoned motorcycle, day-patrol officers arrived promptly. Although the young man claimed they went into the woods due to a stomach ache, the terrified girl fled deeper into the forest to avoid being caught upon seeing the police.

The rescued girl spent the entire night beneath a tree in the middle of the Thambala jungle, which is frequently crossed by wild elephants, leopards, and bears. Following a massive two-day search involving officers from multiple police stations and locals, she was located around 4:00 PM yesterday, and both individuals remain in police custody.
